Looking to try a new candle?

The sun has been shining bright this week! It is feeling warm outside unlike last week where it felt like endless winter. The warm air gave us a good push to begin Spring cleaning around here which I will share more soon! The house has been feeling really refreshing which makes our lives a little happier. To add to all the Spring happy feels is this candle from Charley.

Charley is a skilled graphic designer who began making candles. We love that Charley ties together graphic design and candles. These two skills combined add to the atmosphere of a room, the design looks awesome and the smell is oh so good!!

Get to know a bit about Charley's story behind Handmade Candle Co.

What got you starting making candles?

It all started with a candle kit. A girl I worked with was throwing one out and I thought I would give it a try, I was hooked! I've always loved how fragrance and the soft glow of a candle can change the atmosphere of a room and lift your mood. Originally skilled as a Graphic Designer I have done a lot of branding and packaging for other small businesses so it was exciting to put able to put my own stamp on something and design a brand for my own business.

How did you decide on what scents to make for the market?

I don't particularly like sweet and sickly scents, our company ethos is based around nature and the element of adventure as I love being outdoors. Our candles are the creation of nostalgic reminiscents from places we've been before and the adventures of what are yet to come.

One of the first scents I ever poured was Pine, my childhood was full of woodland walks with my parents, our Pine scent is inspired by this memory - the smell of fresh cut pine needles, the damp forest floor and a bit of dirt thrown in for good measure. Our branding and simple apothecary inspired packaging has an earthy and organic feel which reflects the products we make

What is your process for making candles?

Our candle formula is simple: wick, soy wax, fragrance oil, jar!

What do you want people to know about your company?

Our candles are safe! There has been a lot of speculation over the safety of candles the past couple of years. Paraffin wax candles along with lead wicks are proven to give off harmful toxins which are dangerous when inhaled to both adults and children.

We use soy wax which is made from the oil of soybeans, so it is a vegetable wax. Soy wax is a renewable resource and burns for up to 30-50% longer than paraffin wax. Our candles are also wicked with cotton core wicks so contain no lead or metals, making them safe to use. All of the fragrance oils we use are also considered vegan, neither we nor our suppliers engage in animal testing.

What are some of your goals for your company?

To grow! We are working on an exciting new product which will be available to purchase from our range mid-summer, so keep your eyes peeled! Whilst we love candles we want to make home fragrance options more available to our customers.

To keep our products affordable. Many large candle boutiques have sky-high prices. In this world you get what you pay for - or you get ripped off. Cheap candles from supermarkets or mass produced candles from retailers rarely burn evenly causing the wax to 'tunnel' leaving you with a lot of wasted wax. Our candles burn slower, cleaner and more evenly, giving you a unique and long-lasting product to enjoy.
